Anveshan: Student Research Convention

Dear Vice Chancellor/Director

In an effort to gear up scientific research and innovation and their application to the welfare of the society, Association of Indian Universities has taken the initiative to organize Student Research Conventions for the aspiring researchers throughout the country.

The convention is scheduled to be organized in three phases. In the first phase, all universities in the country are requested to organize a competition/exhibition of research projects at university level in which students from affiliated/constituent colleges, research institutions and university departments will participate. The exhibited projects will be scrutinized by a team of experts.

In the second phase, the competition/exhibition will be organized at Zonal level for which one university in each zone has been identified (details enclosed).  The projects selected at the first phase will be called for the second round of scrutiny.

In the third phase, the competition/exhibition will be held at National level.  The projects selected through zonal competition will be participating in the National Competition.

Accordingly, we request you to send three successful projects (assessed from the competition at university level), one from each of the following group:

1.      Basic Sciences, Applied Sciences, Engineering & Technology, Agriculture and similar fields.

2.      Health Sciences and Allied Subjects including Pharmacy, etc.

3.   Objective and result oriented projects in Social Sciences, Humanities, Commerce, Management, Law, etc.

One project from each of the above group is permissible to be sent for competition/exhibition at the zonal level.  The selected projects are to be sent by the university to the respective Zonal University conducting the convention. Successful projects at the zonal competitions will be called by the Association of Indian Universities for the National level competition.  The projects will be assessed by a panel of experts drawn from various disciplines.  The students whose projects will be selected in the final stage at national level convention will be promoted though proper incentives for career development in research.  .

The general guidelines and the schedule of the events are enclosed for your reference. The same is also available on AIU Website: www. aiuweb.org. As we are running against time, an early action at the first phase of the competition may kindly be initiated.

The entries of the research projects will be purely institutional and only bonafide students of the universities/institutions are eligible to participate. The Registration form of the successful candidates (selected for the zonal level, duly filled in with a crossed Demand Draft of Rs 500 (per participant) covering the registration fee, payable to Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi, may please be forwarded to the concerned AIU coordinators (mentioned in the enclosed schedule) with a copy to the coordinator of the host university at the zonal level, which should reach at least ten days before commencement of the programme.

An early response in this regard shall be highly appreciated.

 With regards,

Yours sincerely,

GUIDLINES

Anveshan: Student Research Convention

Introduction

Spirit of inquiry, creativity and innovativeness are some of the natural endowments bestowed upon human beings, which are the keys to transformation of life. These factors, when manifested in the form of research, open new frontiers of knowledge, which is instrumental for all forms of development. Perhaps, this is the reason for which research is recognized as one of the core functions of the universities/institutions of higher learning and the universities have been rendering this responsibility with utmost diligence. But, of late, research has become a subservient component in the university functioning. It is not considered a lucrative career option. Apart from this, resource constraints, lack of commitment, lack of proper encouragement, etc., are the impediments that are affecting the quality of research in our institutions of higher education. Another important factor for the deterioration of the quality of research is the absence of adequate training and other capacity building endeavour in our system, which has restricted students’ creativity only to rote memory. On the contrary, their potential should be nurtured and exploited for the benefit of the society.

In View of this, the Association of Indian Universities has taken a pioneering initiative to organize student research conventions for the aspiring researchers through out the country. These conventions aim at identifying the young and rising talents who would be promoted through proper encouragement and incentives. Also an attempt shall be made to commercialize their research projects with industrial collaboration. The endeavour may accelerate scientific research and innovation and their application towards community development percolating to the grassroot level.

Objectives

·        To identify young talents with research aptitude and interest to take up research as career.

·     To promote the talent in research throughout the country.

·        To nurture the talent through specialized training and education in some of the nationally and internationally reputed premier institutions of higher learning in the country.

·        To augment financial and physical resources through collaboration with different sponsors for supporting education and training of the young researchers.

Status of Self Financing Courses in Indian Universities

Dear Vice Chancellor/Director

Strengthening of the Higher  Education System has remained  the priority area  of our Union and State Governments for many years. However, major problem of funding and more dependence on Government funds remain a block in the functioning of the Universities. There is a constant pressure on the higher education institutions to generate their resources to fill in the gaps. As a result, there is large expansion of Self Financing Courses in the Indian Universities offering Degree, Diploma, Certificate Programme. But, contrary to their quantitative expansion ,there have been a very few assessment of their functioning, quality dimensions etc

Keeping this in view, Association of Indian Universities considered it pertinent to take up a study on the status of Self Financing Courses in Indian Universities. The study has focussed on the growth and development of Self Financing Courses in Indian Universities; factors responsible for the growth of self financing courses; the share of income from Self Financing Courses to total internal income; the adequacy of income(Self Financing Courses).

Accordingly, we have designed a questionnaire taking certain  parameters into account, such as: strength of faculty, nature of funding, number of self financing courses, student intake and admission process, basic fee structure, share of self financing courses in total income of the University, expenditure on different heads, research activities, publications of the faculty, provisions for scholarship for meritorious but economically weaker students etc.We request you to forward the questionnaire to the various departments running Self Financing Courses.

We shall be grateful if we get information in the enclosed questionnaire at the earliest, preferably within two weeks. Kindly cooperate and try not to leave any question unanswered. The  questionnaire is also available on the AIU website, which can be filled in and sent  back to us.

Your kind cooperation will go a long way in achieving the objectives of the study and knowing their status, which is an important issue in the present scenario of higher education.

Status of Biotechnology in Indian Universities

Dear Vice Chancellor/Director

The horizon of Biotechnology is expanding very rapidly. Its application in the field of Agriculture, Health, Medicine, Energy and Environment is promising. This technology has a great scope to contribute directly to the  alleviation of human sufferings.  Being a knowledge based industry, it is one of the most promising areas of growth and development. However, it is yet to reach its desired expectations in India. Our universities have to play an important role in its elevation so   that it may be one of the most coveted areas in Vision 2010.

Keeping this in view, AIU considered it pertinent to take up a study on the status of Biotechnology in Indian universities. The study has focused on growth and development of biotechnology in universities and to what extent they have been capable of strengthening the research and development.

Accordingly, we have designed a questionnaire taking certain parameters into account, such as: number of universities running biotechnology courses, annual student intake faculty strength, academic contribution of faulty members, funding resources, research activities, placement of students, patent obtained etc.

We shall be grateful if you provide the information in the enclosed questionnaire at the earliest. Kindly try not to leave any question unanswered. The questionnaire is also available on the AIU website, which can be filled and sent back electronically.

Your kind cooperation will go a long way in achieving the objective of the study which is an important issue in the present scenario where Biotechnology is seen as boon in the growth of Science and Technology.
