Sub: National Calendar of University Games: 2008-2009

Dear Sir/Madam,

The National Calendar of University Games 2008-2009 has been finalized and approved  by Inter
University Sports Board of India (AIU) in its 19th AGM   held  on May 8-9, 2008  at Gujarat Vidyapith,
Ahmedabad
380 014.  Accordingly, Inter University Tournaments have been allotted, keeping in mind,
adequate accommodation, trained manpower and sporting infrastructure etc available in the concerned
host universities with a view to ensure successful conduct of the competitions.

In recognition of the meritorious services for promoting competitive sports  in the universities and
colleges, the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports granted AIU, the status of National Sports Promoting Organization.  Now it will be our collective endeavour to concentrate more on Priority Disciplines for
achieving excellence while participating in the World University Games/Championships.  Really, this is
a big challenge for the university sports system to perform creditably well and prove its worth.  Hopefully,
we can meet the   challenge by adopting the policy of ”catching them young followed by coaching them
young”. The most productive period of  human life is the youth between  the age 18-28 while studying  in universities and colleges.  Hence, Indian youth have all the required potential which could be converted in
the World Beaters through  focused training

Further, in order to avoid the clash all possible efforts should be made to adjust the dates of Inter
University Tournaments with the dates of National and International sporting championships to be
organized by various sports bodies so that talented university sportspersons can participate in both the competitions conveniently.  This exercise will definitely provide an improved standard of domestic competitions.

Before finalizing dates of the zonal tournaments being conducted by your esteemed university/institute,
an active schedule of the following mega events may also be kept in view..

1.      1st National Youth Games from July 22 to 29, 2008 at Bangalore

2.      Olympic Games-2008 from August  8 to 24 2008 at Beijing (China)

3.      Youth Commonwealth Games from October 12 to 18, 2008 at Pune

4.      The National Games- 2008 from December  01 to 13,2008 (Jharkhand)

This may please be accorded top priority in larger interest of university sports.

            Thanking you,

                                                                                    Yours Sincerely,

                                                                                    Dr Gurdeep Singh
                                                                                    Under Secretary(Sports)
