Under the aegis of the AIU, Kathmandu University successfully organized the third SAUFEST
at the University Campus, Dhulikhel, Nepal
during 7–11 February 2008. This successful event provided
a wider platform in Nepal for promoting international peace, harmony
and understanding among the youths of South
Asia. It also helped to familiarize the delegates
with the rich cultural and natural heritage of Nepal.
The inaugural
ceremony was held on 7th February, Thursday at 9 am on the
university sports ground. Speaker of the Legislature Parliament,
Rt. Hon’ble Subash
Chandra Nembang inaugurated SAUFEST
2008 to mark the official beginning of the five days long
mega event. Minister of Education and Sports, Pradip
Nepal lighted
the lamp of 3rd SAUFEST.
The Festival
gathered more than 350 students from 5 countries of South
Asia. In the 3rd SAUFEST there was a wider representation
of all the universities of Nepal. After Nepal, the biggest representation was from India through
its four zonal winners of the I U Youth Festivals. Also
wider participation of Bangladesh and
Bengali Culture was seen in the festival. 3rd SAUFEST was pleased to have Pakistan for the first time in SAUFEST.
More than
26 hours’ cultural presentations in three days which included
folk dances, folk orchestra, mimes, light vocal and semi
classical both formal and informal events.
Swagat Sabailai-
(a warm welcome to everyone) was the opening song performed
by Kathmandu University student in the Cultural Program
at the CV Raman Auditorium on the first day of SAUFEST 2008.
The cultural exchanges attained a vibrant colour
on the second day (8th February, Friday)as
the participants from all the Universities rendered majestic
diversity in their performances in the CV Raman Auditorium
KU.
On
the third day of SAUFEST 2008 beside the other programs,
Professor Dayananda Dongaonkar, Secretary
General of Association of Indian Universities (AIU) gave
a lecture on ‘Scientific Basis of Yoga’. Dhulikhel Municipality

SAUFEST 2008 in library Auditorium, KU.
The
fourth day (10th February, Sunday) was the Main Tour to
Kathmandu
Darbar Square
and then to Patan
Darbar Square
filled with a breathtaking range of aesthetic monuments
and architectures, antique palaces, shrines and temples
offering their age old cultural heritage. Some of the tremendous
dealings of SAUFEST were enthusiastic reception and participation
of local community, enthusiastic participation in Fine Arts
and Debate, Spot creations after the Fine Arts activities,
Spontaneous Press discussion, Morning walks and Yoga, Tour
to Kathmandu, Art Exhibition.
Active and strong involvement of local and community institutions,
etc. were among the most memorable events that happened
in SAUFEST 2008. The performance of the local instrumental
band Kutumba was noted as the best. On the fifth day during debate
the auditorium resonated with the sounds of objections,
agreements, rebuttals and refusals as the debaters from
India,
Bangladesh,
and Nepal exhibited
their oratory amidst a lively audience. The topics of the
debate were ‘Youth alone can ensure South Asian cooperation’,
‘Human resource sharing is the only way for economic development
of South Asia’, and ‘Cultural
sharing is a must for peace building’.

the prevalent practice of organizing SAUFEST, KU provided
local hospitality to the delegates on its own campus. All
the guests and participants were given SAUFEST 2008 bag,
stationeries, SAUFEST cap, memento, certificate, souvenir,
